The Culver Glass Company’s (Brooklyn, NY) first run of Mardi Gras pattern glassware was between 1959 and 1962. The design consisted of flat gold leaf & rhinestone jewels. It appears there were comparitively few of these made. Later versions had a thicker, textured gold pattern. The glasses for sale here are the earlier and rarer flat gold design. Variations of this pattern include the figures backed in blue, gold or black. These are blue backed. These are early-version unsigned glasses. Early-production Mardi Gras glasses are growing rarer with time. Early on, Culver perfected the (still) secret process of high heat firing 22k Gold onto glassware, allowing for finely textured gold & rhinestone displays that withstood the years. The secret process of heat firing 22k Gold to glass died 2001, along with the last known member of the family involved with the business.
