Vistosi Murano Glass Covered Jar -1960’s – Italian Design – Mid Century Modern. Beautifully designed and hand-crafted Italian art glass covered jar by the well-known, important Murano glass studio, Vistosi. Unsigned (originally would have had a paper or foil label). Striking modern form made from heavy glass. Features a white interior, cased with a fine deep jewel-like emerald green color glass exterior. Both the bottom of the jar and the top of the lid have been ground and polished smooth, as have the rims of the jar and lid. Probably designed by Alessandro Pianon. HEIGHT (with lid) : 5 3/4 (15 cm). DIAMETER : 3 3/4 (10 cm). Excellent condition with very light weare. No chips or repairs. Very light wear to the bottom. Dating back to the 15th Century, Vistosi has been one of the premier Murano glass manufacturers. The present Vistosi company was founded in 1945. Born in Venice in 1931, Luciano Vistosi grew up on the island of Murano where his family owned glassworks that produced industrial products. When his father died in 1952 he stopped his studies and, together with his uncle Oreste and brother Gino, founded the new Vetreria Vistosi with the aim of creating products in particular lighting which reflected the new modernism. In the 1950`s Luciano Vistosi took the family business to unparrallelled heights. The company worked with many great designers such as Aulenti, Zanuso, Sottsass, Peduzzi Riva, Dal Lago, Meronen Beckmann, Michele De Lucchi, Vico Magistretti, Alega, Angelo Mangiarotti, Alessandro Pianon, Giogali & Alberto Mera. Vistosi produced series of lamps which are now iconic such as Neverrino, Bissa & Bissona, and Onfale. Vistosi`s designs of the 60`s & 70`s anticipated both minimalism and 80`s excess. Using white or completely translucent glass shifted the emphasis on the elongated, curvaceous or bulbous form.
