Tremendous Architectural size Mid Century Modern floor Swung Glass Vase from the mid-20th century. This enormous Amberina/Orange glass floor vase stands 33 Inches tall! Studio glass of the 1960s 1970s in architectural sizes like this are hard to find. In addition, the pattern that makes it shimmer and glow with the lighting is unusual and fascinating. Probably made by Fenton Art Glass. Other makers of the mid-20th century, like L. Smith and Viking Art Glass, made grand vases like this too as it was popular among the very mod. It was hand-blown from a three part base mold, then swung to lengthen, then the opening was hand-tooled and heat polished smooth. The mold pattern consists of hobnail rings which you can see at the base in images. As the vase was literally swung around to produce the neck it caused the hobnails to elongate and created their own unique pattern. The result is stunning. You can see the light and pattern effects in the images attached. The tip of the rim is bordered in a very light yellow. The body is a shimmering orange. The lower body of the vase has an irregular shape and measures approx 8 Diameter. Foot/Base measurement is 5.25 Diameter. Its is perfect shape. The interior is clean and without calcium stains. Solid, thick, shiny clean glass. Makers of mid-century glass, such as Viking Art Glass and L. Smith Glass Company, made swung vases, which were very popular. Other companies like Pilgrim, Fenton, Tiffin and Fostoria made their own versions of the swung vase, but they were not as common. The vases generally ranged in height from a 7 bud vase to the giant architectural floor versions that were sometimes over 40 tall. They were hand-blown, then hand-swung to lengthen, and then the opening was hand-tooled and heat polished smooth. The vases were literally swung around to produce the neck, with stunning results. Popular colors were amberina (an orange-red fading to yellow, also called persimmon), green, amber, red, blue and an opaque orange usually referred to as bittersweet.
